“Here’s Where the Fun Begins” STAR WARS Turns 37 Today!

STAR WARS premiered on May 25th in 1977 - thirty-seven years ago today - and next
December we'll get to see what the future holds for beloved Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Meanwhile here are just a few images of the vintage original- behind the scenes, promo photos, and comic art.

I never tire of looking at these BTS shots - it reminds how I discovered my love of film-making, special effects, & costume design by constantly pouring through my old Making of Star Wars books, and reading mags like Starlog back in the day.

Character concept art for the upcoming Dark Horse alternate Star Wars comic series based on
George Lucas's early script draft - where the beloved characters were not exactly as we know them now.

Dark Horse's Concept Comic 'The Star Wars' Preview Art

Preview panels from Dark Horse Comics just announced "The Star Wars" Comic.
It's a really creative and neat alternate Star Wars idea - the story is based on George Lucas's very
early script draft and the iconic character concept designs of Ralph McQuarrie. Looks cool so far!

Prometheus Unused - Favorite Alternate Movie Poster Art

Prometheus is out on home vid today - various DVD/Blu-Ray combos packed with tons of bonus material.
But, you can also find lots of great concept art, stills, and extras - like the really cool unused movie poster
ideas above - on the extensive film site. The movie is full of titanically scaled and eerily impressive imagery,
Micheal Fassbender's android David has an innocent creepiness that is almost endearing, and I really
enjoyed the the visual homage and story parallels to the original Alien film. And, since all I was
expecting was a franchise launch/re-launch - and not some kind of "revelation" - I wasn't disappointed.
It's a fun ride with epic eye candy and plenty of threads left hanging for sequels.

Alternate Universe Cinema - ‘The Hunger Games’ - Kevin Tancharoen's Directoral Pitch Reel

It's always fascinating to look under the hood of the filmmaking process and see what might have been.
This is Director Kevin Tancharoen’s concept trailer/pitch reel which reveals a much less
restrained and overtly Sci-Fi take on The Hunger Games. Via /Film

The Retro 70's Badass Daredevil Film That Might Have Been

This difference in the "not for kids version" - it incorporates a some more overtly graphically
violent clips as well shots of the Ben Affleck's Daredevil.

Director Joe Carnahan's Retro-tastic film treatment concept pitch reels for his 1970's style take on
Daredevil: Born Again. Unfortunately due to the complicated status of Marvel's movie rights it looks unlikely this will not see further development. Although, I do suspect Carnahan's sharing the clips and subsequent overwhelmingly positive fan reaction may be a viral pitch to keep it alive when rights revert to Marvel.
/Film has a nice concise explanation of the Fox/Marvel rights situation.

Hawkeye Costume Fusion Redesign By Noelle Stevenson

Noelle Stevenson took a fun stab at designing a Hawkeye costume that incorporates more
classic comic Hawkeye elements into movie look Hawkeye. I think it actually works really well.
But, I suspect they'll never go with an all purple suit for the films.

Toyota Fun Vii Concept Car - Predicts A Rave-tacular Future

Welcome to the Future! - It's like a happy Tron meets Blade Runner world, where you can update Facebook on your car side panels. But by the end it all starts to feel oddly more like Logan's Run.
Do you see any old people? Nope - just young awe dazed hipsters and "smart" cars in the big Carousel-like arena at the end. Renew! Renew! Renew!
