Creepy Thanksgiving! - Odd Macy's Balloons of Parades Past

Images via Daily News and Flavorwire

Basically, up until the mid 1960's the balloons might as well have been designed for the Joker's parade
from Tim Burton's Batman...or the Green Goblin's parade attack scene from Raimi's Spider-Man.

Belated Look @ Fantastic NYC Holiday Windows - Bergdorf, Macy's, Saks & Barney's

While Macy's Animated Steampunk Wonderland Windows are fabulous have been featured prominently on the web my personal favorites are the Bergdorf Goodman windows. They do also show a nod to the Steampunk or Neo-Victorian aesthetic. Featuring Glamorous Women and Suited Beasts posing for vintage portraits as well as some windows overstuffed with fascinating specimens & curiosities.

The full curio windows also remind of Graeme Base's illustrations in Animalia.

Here's a nice look at the fanciful Macy's windows. See some more great detail photos here.

Saks Fifth Avenue also snuck some Steam-inspired gears into their windows.

And Lady Gaga's Workshop @ Barney's featured some very cool Deco Futuristic displays.

Most images via Refinery 29 which features a review of even more NYC windows here.

The Nightmare Before Thanksgiving Day - Tim Burton's Macy's Parade Balloon Design

Burton's design sketch for B. Boy. And here's his origin story via the NY Times.
"B. was created, Frankenstein’s monster-style, from the leftover balloons used in children’s parties at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Forbidden from playing with other children because of his jagged teeth and crazy-quilt stitching, B. retreated to a basement lair, where he obsesses over Albert Lamorisse’s film “The Red Balloon” and dreams that he, too, will be able to fly someday."
Just more evidence we live in awesome times.
